Caffeine before ultrasound?

Okay, this may be a dumb question.  I am having my elective ultrasound Friday to find out the sex.  A couple of different people have suggested I drink some caffeine before the ultrasound to get the baby moving and increase the odds of being able to see its parts.  I haven't had any caffeine since I was 3 weeks pregnant.  I always intended to keep caffeine as a vice through my pregnancy, as I have always been an avid coffee and tea drinker.  But pretty much as soon as I got pregnant the smell and sight of coffee or any warm beverage started repulsing me and even making me sick.  I'm not a big pop drinker, so I decided to just go caffeine free since somehow my body wasn't interested.
Anybody else been suggested this or done this?  I am wondering if it would actually help because honestly I don't want to drink a pop for no reason (for fear that I'll start craving them), but if it would get the baby moving, I'd be all for it because I am so ready to find out Friday!

Re: Caffeine before ultrasound?

  • I've also been told to drink something high in sugar...like juice. Maybe you could try that if you want to avoid the caffeine? With my last US, the baby was moving like CRAZY without me having anything. I just don't think the poor thing liked being squished by the wand :p

  • Orange juice will do the same thing. Though, I don't think it's really necessary. You could bring some and have a drink if they aren't active enough.

  • When I had my ultrasound our tech told us that mother's come in all the time asking why their baby isn't moving around they drank 2 lattes. His response was that the baby was now in a coma from all the caffeine. He said that the sugar from juice or caffine from pop or coffee hits the baby faster then you would think and most times women drink it too early.
  • Thanks guys.  I have taken to drinking orange juice a lot since I got pregnant.  That's what I'll have.

And I'd bring it with you to drink rather than drinking it before -- in my third trimester, I had weekly biophysical monitoring and they always gave me a capri sun (haha) to drink right before they put the monitors on... it always made him dance!  Quickly!

  • With our first, they couldn't get the a/s measurements that they needed (sex was quick, measurements were not), so they gave me the choice to either come back or to have a soda/coffee to wake her up.  I choose the latter since the MFM office that our OB refers to is an hour from our house.  I'd say to bring it along in case.

  • I was told to drink or eat something with sugar/caffeine 30 min before my scheduled elective US with my first.  I drank a large dr. pepper 20 min before and it had my LO moving all around on the US, so it was very easy for the tech to tell it was a boy!  I didn't drink or eat anything before my 20 week US with the doctor, and my LO was less active and it was much harder for the doc to distinguish the sex...he didn't know we already knew. ;)

I am getting an elective again this time around, and I limit myself to 1 caffeine drink a day already, so I plan on drinking it right before the appointment that day.  I have been unable to drink coffee at all this pregnancy as well, so I stick with coke or pepsi for my much needed (less caffeinated) fix.  Hope this helps!

Not caffeine but my 3d place I go to suggest having juice (apple or orange) 30 minutes before hand to help wake baby up.
  • Oh they also told me jut drinking cold water will do the trick as it will make your bladder fill up and when you go to the bathroom it will move baby around and wake them up.

  • Last time I went for an ultrasound my doctor made me eat a snickers and drink a pop!
